I would like to welcome you to the 73rd WAZA Annual Conference in Bangkok, Thailand.
It is with great pleasure that I invite you to Bangkok, the city of Angels, for the 73rd WAZA Annual Conference (WAZA2018), with The Zoological Park Organization Under the Royal Patronage of H.M. The King as the host in the period of October 21-25, 2018 at Avani Bangkok Riverside Hotel. It is the globally prime zoos and aquariums academic conference which our focus will be on the important contribution that zoos and aquariums make to society. The world’s best zoos and aquariums are modern, innovative, impactful, inspiring and pertinent to current challenges – both ecological and social. We will examine how WAZA zoos and aquariums are acting as leaders in their communities, how WAZA members are working collaboratively across continents to develop best practice and most importantly how we are evidencing our impact both on the natural world and on society. We will explore the unique contribution that zoos and aquariums can make and suggest areas of focus most relevant to the current times.
The past seventy-two on WAZA conferences were successful with your support from all corners of the world. I hope this coming 73rd conference will be as successful as previous seventy-two conferences: as an international platform for exchange and update of information as well as networking amongst the zoologists, researchers and activists in this field.
Last but not least, Bangkok: a consistent top travel destination awardee, offers a variety of sightseeing, varied gastronomic experiences and shopping opportunities that those will fit any budget. I trust that you will definitely enjoy an unforgettable experience in Bangkok while visiting here.
I look forward to welcoming you in Bangkok, Thailand for WAZA 2018.
Prof. Parntep Ratanakron
Chairman of the organizing committee, WAZA2018
On behalf of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) and its global partnership I would like to welcome you to the 73rd WAZA Annual Conference in Bangkok.
WAZA stands on the brink of dramatic change as the world’s leading zoos and aquariums prepare to address major issues such as climate change, sustainable development, species trade and illegal conservation. Bangkok is a fitting city to host this event as much of WAZA’s anticipated growth and development will come in Asia.
The conference theme, “Wild at Heart,” is meant to reflect not only the passion each of us holds for the animals in our care, but also the link those animals represent in the battle to save endangered species and protect natural habitat.
Bangkok is a modern city with over 500 years of history that consistently ranks among the world’s top tourist destinations, and Thailand’s connection to the natural world is evident. Successful conservation programmes have brought highly endangered species such as Saurus cranes and Indochinese tigers back from the brink of extinction, and are as innovative as they are inspired.
WAZA will celebrate these achievements in Bangkok, but also take a hard look at the work zoos and aquariums are doing in the 21st century to not only raise their own standards, but also play a more active role in securing the future for wildlife.
The world is changing quickly, and iconic species are in the balance. There is no time for delay. WAZA believes that the world’s leading zoos and aquariums – those truly “Wild at Heart” – are poised to make a difference.
